Tonatierra Community Development Institute is engaged with a network of committed community partners to enhance its capacity to deliver community programs in the Palomino Neighborhood ("The Square") by developing a 2.1 acre C-3 property into a multi-use community campus and business center in the area of north central Phoenix. The plan calls for construction of a new 11,000 sq. ft. office building with available leasable office space and facilities to serve the educational, health, and social service needs of the area. The new facility would serve as a catalyst to stimulate the local economy of the area as an element and asset of a Comprehensive Community Economic Development Strategy focused on the Palomino Neighborhood with intended linkages with the regional, state, national, international, and global economy.
Since emergence in 1993, TONATIERRA has successfully brought to realization community development programming of like nature in the Valley of the Sun working to stimulate and integrate with dignity and justice all elements of the local economy, including small and large businesses, labor and industry, schools and cultural institutions within a respectful and inclusive planning matrix that is community driven. This is the Community Ecology approach to community development.
Working from ground zero within the present economic and political context, and understanding the cyclical nature of macro economic trends, it is imperative to act now in order to provide the necessary micro economic linkages necessary in order to take advantage of the opportunities that are inherent in any crises situation. Such locally driven stimulus action now will provide the local and regional economy a solid foundation in the form of capacity and community assets that will establish the infrastructure for economic recovery and lead to long-range sustainable community planning and development.
Primary partnerships in the Macehualli Community Campus Project will include: Educational Institutions of all ranges, medical service providers and clinics, Green Economy Business incubators, legal services center, workforce development and training center, public library, tax preparation, and a unique combined Youth and Senior Citizen Center.
