Thank you for all your support of the Centro Macehualli throughout the last 6 years. When we
started on February 1, 2003 many people thought that we would not survive. Instead, we have
established a nationally recognized center thanks to the vision of the jornaler@s, business
owners, neighborhood schools and churches in the area that saw that a Centro would the only
viable solution to a contentious situation. The Macehuallis, those that deserve praise and honor for their sacrifice, have created one of the few self-managed center in the nation. The workers
themselves have created the rules and regulations, take responsibilities of translation, facilitation between workers and employers, and maintain a register to process workers in an orderly manner.
We have had many milestones including the fact that last year we took the responsibility of
ownership and eventual development of the property where the Centro is located at 16801 North
25th St. In 2006, we organized a spiritual run with jornaler@s and migratory workers from Los
Angeles to New York ending with entry to the United Nations Permanent Forum on Indigenous
Issues.
This year has started with many challenges that our community, day labor workers and their
families are confronting. However, the climate that surrounds us will not deter our plans to keep
moving forward to assure that our community is treated with Respect and Dignity. It is during
these difficult times that we need your continued support.
